Resilience by Design: Georgia Power’s Strategy for Enterprise-Wide Storm Preparedness

In this case study, Georgia Power’s response to Hurricane Helene — the most destructive storm in its history — is examined in detail. The utility’s proactive mobilization included pre-positioning 10,000 personnel, leveraging advanced drone technology under a BVLOS waiver for rapid damage assessment, and maintaining critical communications through storm-hardened networks. Georgia Power adapted quickly as the storm’s path shifted, coordinated with mutual assistance partners to deploy more than 20,000 workers, and implemented innovative customer outreach when traditional channels failed. Post-event enhancements included predictive modeling, streamlined communication, fatigue management protocols, and institutionalized storm drills, offering key takeaways for building resilience across the utility sector.
