Advancing Outage Communications at Alabama Power

Alabama Power has introduced a suite of advanced outage notifications that significantly improve customer awareness, field safety, and operational communication. In 2024, the utility launched automated alerts for regulatory and high-bill meter tests, proactive meter change-outs, and short-notice planned interruptions, giving customers clear, timely information about brief power disruptions and when crews will be on their property. The alerts provide sequenced updates, allow customers to request status information, and include a short survey that has already guided refinements. Early results show higher customer satisfaction, improved preparedness, and safer field conditions. With strong internal governance and planned system upgrades, Alabama Power is now exploring expanded use cases, including vegetation work, drone inspections, and non-power “lines down” investigations.
