Duke Energy Builds an Enterprise Preparedness Program Integrating Emergency Management and Business Continuity
Duke Energy has developed an enterprise preparedness program that integrates emergency management and business continuity to ensure critical operations remain functional during major disruptions. Rather than treating response and continuity as separate disciplines, the company manages preparedness as an enterprise capability supported by governance, structured planning cycles, and continuous evaluation. The program combines risk assessments, business impact analyses, and standardized plan reviews to maintain alignment across business units. Duke organizes the effort using a Governance, Oversight, Support, and Perform (GOSP) model and conducts approximately 200 exercises annually to test and refine plans. Strong executive engagement and a focus on continuous improvement have enabled the company to strengthen resilience while ensuring essential functions—from payroll to customer service—remain operational during crises.
