Austin Energy’s Outage Education Campaign Encourages Customers to Get and Stay Ready
Instances of extreme weather are becoming more common around the world, and Texas is no exception. Over the past four years, Central Texas experienced two major winter weather events of the kind that used to be considered “once in a lifetime,” with widespread and extended power outages that kept some customers without power for more than a week.
In response, Austin Energy launched an effort to improve outage communications practices and education. To reach this goal, the utility used customer information to enhance existing web content and also launched a new campaign to help customers prepare for outages in the future. A central component of this initiative is communicating to customers when there is no immediate event on the horizon, to help educate them and prepare them ahead of time.
