Tale of Two Storms Reshapes Outage Communications at Con Edison
In the winter of 2026, New York City experienced two severe weather events within weeks of each other: Winter Storm Fern, followed by a powerful February blizzard. Together, the storms created extraordinary pressure not only on infrastructure and restoration crews, but also on the pace and transparency of communications with customers, elected officials, and the media.
Through rapid adaptation and high-output customer messaging during two extreme winter storms, Con Edison strengthened public trust, improved stakeholder alignment, and demonstrated how agile communications can support safe restoration in a fast-moving emergency environment. This effort earned Con Edison Bronze recognition for Excellence in Outage Communications in Chartwell’s 2026 Best Practices Awards.
