BC Hydro’s Expanding EV Network Helps Redefine Utility’s Role in the Clean Energy Transition
By almost any measure, British Columbia has become one of North America’s electric vehicle leaders. More than 220,000 electric vehicles now travel the province’s roads, and behind that growth is an ambitious public charging network designed not simply to keep vehicles moving, but to give drivers confidence that going electric is practical regardless of where they travel.
BC Hydro has transformed its public charging network into one of North America’s fastest-growing and most reliable utility-owned systems, doubling the network to more than 900 charging ports across more than 180 locations while introducing ultra-fast charging technology, larger charging hubs, and innovative deployment strategies that support drivers in urban centers, rural communities, and remote highways alike.
This effort earned BC Hydro the Gold Award for Excellence in Electric Vehicle Programs in Chartwell’s 2026 Best Practices Awards.
